Start of year was something that both excited and saddened Lily Evans. The red head was glad to be back in the halls of Hogwarts and yet with each year that passed she was closer to leaving. This year was her sixth year and after this year she would have only one year left. As she had gotten ready this morning she had pushed that thought to the back of her mind.
Now she was sitting at Gryffindor table slightly earlier than most. The long house tables were only littered with a few students and the staff table had no one on it. Lily say herself down quietly away from any of the small friendship groups that were enjoying breakfast together and began to spread jam on her toast. As she nibbled at the strawberry jammed toast Lily waited anxiously for the toast and for her new timetable to arrive.

It was rather early for James to be up - certainly true. It really didn't bother him at the moment because He saw Lily Evans sitting alone munching on a piece of jam covered toast. He picked up his bag, and moved along the length of the table, plopping into the seat across the table from her, a broad grin on his face. He ran his hand through his hair as he so often did, and looked closely at her, wanting to so desperately proclaim his love for her from the rooftops. Instead, he opted for his usual opener for when he talked to Lily.
"Morning, Evans! So...First Hogsmeade Weekend's in a couple months. Thinking of going with anyone?"James asked her coyly.

Out of the corner of her eye Lily could see a messy haired boy moving up and she prayed that her owl would get here quickly and give her an excuse to leave. However it was not to be. The owl had still not showed and James Potter had seated himself across from her. Surprisingly enough he was on his own. Lily placed her toast down on the plate before adressing him. "Potter. We've only just started school and the first Hogsmeade weekend isn't really on my mind. Right now I just want my timetable and to see how I can fit in all the work."
Lily was hoping he would leave soon. Maybe that Sirius or Remus would join him. That would occupy his attention and maybe then she could make a quick get away.

James shrugged a bit as she reminded him that she wasn't thinking about Hogsmeade yet. Well, it was better than an outright no, at any rate. It left some hope for the possibility of her saying yes in a week or so. James took a piece of toast, covering it with grape jam, and looked at Lily, almost launching into a monologue on how her eyes reminded him of beautiful scenic hills.
"Well, if it's any help, I am sure you'll manage to fit in all your work. After all, you're the smartest witch in the year." He was only being honest. He thought Lily might think he was trying to butter her up, but he really didn't care.

She picked up her toast again and began to eat it before putting it down and picking up a goblet of pumpkin juice. "Potter if you're looking for the answer about Hogsmeade it's still a no. I honestly meant what I said about the giant squid last year." Lily honestly believed that she would have a better time going out on a date with the squid rather than with James Potter. He was so full of himself. So big headed. So arrogant. It infuriated her. However Lily was trying to be as civil as possible towards him.

James' mouth dropped open in shock at her words. He should have expected it. He'd been trying for four years, after all. Each time he'd tried, it had always turned out the same way. He had thought after the incident by the lake last year after O.W.L's would have made her more persuasive to go out with him - especially after what Snape had called her.
"But I've not got tentacles and sucker things. How can you like a giant squid better than me?" James asked defensively, a hint of immature brattyness and whining entering his voice with the question.

Lily saw his mouth drop and once again a small part of her felt bad and wondered what would happen if she actually said yes to him. But the sense kicked in and realised it would be horrific. It would never work out. Once James had what he wanted he would be long gone. He wasn't mature enough to have a relationship that would last.
"The giant squid is more mature, more responsible, has better manner, isn't as troublesome and is more handsome than you Potter." Ok so the last one wasn't true but she wanted to get rid of him. The one thing she could not deny is that James Potter was a persistant bugger. He didn't give up and she wasn't sure if that was a bad thing. Maybe he was wearing her down..... NO!

James felt hurt and injured by her statements. Perhaps they didn't have Giant Squids in the Muggle World, and that was why Lily liked it so much. James felt like wanting to cry as she even called the squid more handsome than him. It was illogical - a handsome squid?
"Well, I am sorry you feel that way, Evans." James looked at her again, and quickly fled the hall for the kitchens, hoping to drown his misery in Roast Ox and Firewhiskey.

Lily looked at him with her emeral green eyes and could see that flicker of pain in his hazel ones. No way had she really hurt James Potter. It was Potter. He didn't really get hurt. But James was up and off and Lily felt bad. "James..." However she doubted he had heard her as he stalked off and Lil put her head in her hands.
